Call for applications: International Climate Protection Fellowships

The International Climate Protection Fellowships enable prospective leaders to conduct a research-related project of their own choice during a one-year stay in Germany. Under this call, the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung / Foundation will award up to 15 International Climate Protection Fellowships to prospective leaders from developing countries, including South Africa. Applicants need to be working in the field of climate protection and resource conservation in academia, business or administration in their home country. In addition to applicants who have been trained in the natural and engineering sciences, candidates who have been engaged in legal, economic and societal issues relating to climate change are encouraged to apply for this programme

1. Monthly fellowship amount between 2,150-2,750 EUR
2. Family allowances, lump sum for travel expenses
The programme, which is being funded under the International Climate Initiative by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, includes a preparatory intensive language course in Germany, a several-week introductory seminar, a several-day training course and a final meeting in Berlin. These activities will enable you to gain additional insights into academic, social, cultural, economic and political life in Germany.

REQUIREMENTS1. A detailed statement by a host in Germany, including a confirmation of support. Details of the proposed project must be discussed with the prospective host prior to application;
2. Independent project proposal agreed with host in the field of climate protection and resource conservation; and
3. Two to three expert references by individuals qualified to comment on the candidate’s professional, personal and, if applicable, academic eligibility and his / her leadership potential.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA1. First academic degree (Bachelors’ or equivalent) completed no more than 12 years prior to start of fellowship (1 September 2013) with outstanding results;
2. Professional experience in a leadership role (at least 48 months at the time of application) or further (academic or professional) qualification;
3. Initial practical experience (at least 12 months at the time of application) through involvement in projects related to climate protection and resource conservation; and
4. Leadership potential demonstrated by initial experience in leadership positions and/or appropriate references.
Potential applicants who have spent more than six months in Germany or more than 12 months in a country that is not on the list of countries at the time of or shortly before application should contact the Humboldt Foundation ( before submitting an application as they may be ineligible on formal grounds.
